A Hiring Process for the company but a Sales process for You (You are Selling Yourself)

  1. Companies  advertise for a position and they may  receive 100's of resumes.
  2. They  scan the 100's of resumes.
  3. They call a few people to schedule an interview.

When looking for work you need to put yourself in the position or "Mind Set" of the person doing the hiring. As noted above they may receive 100's of resumes for a given position.

So how do they find yours?

Here is one thing to consider. How do you open your mail? I am sure you have an "A" pile = important and a "B" pile = unimportant or junk mail. Similar to your email box. You probably also open your mail near the garbage, correct? Do you open and read your mail on Friday? Saturday? Sunday? Monday? Holidays? Most likely not. The most popular days for reading mail are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. So if you are sending in your resume you need to get it into the "A" pile on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

How to Get into the "A" pile

When you see an opening, call the company, look online or ask an employee, "What is the exact name of the person doing the hiring".  Then address your Cover Letter to that person (people respond better to there own name). There is a cover letter included that you can copy. Let's say the person hiring is "Sandra Johnson" address your cover letter to her name . Get a Number #10 Window envelope and put your one page resume and one page cover letter in that envelope, with Sandra's name/ address from the cover letter showing through the window.

Do Not put a return address on the envelope. Take it to the post office and get in Metered for 1st class postage only. Mail it on Monday so it arrives on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Do not send it by registered or return receipt. This will anger the hiring person because of the extra hassle. Do Not use overnight or any other delivery system. This will only get you into the "B" pile.

If you received a letter like this, would it get into your "A" pile and would you read it? Statistics say YES, it looks like your new credit card and it arrived when you were most likely to read it.
